Explore Your Debt Management Options

Debt management plan, consumer proposal, bankruptcy—there are many ways to resolve your financial problems. Your 1000 Islands Credit Counsellor will help you explore the options and provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision about your financial future.

Will a debt management plan work for you?

A debt management plan (also known as debt counseling, credit counselling, or consumer credit counseling) is a voluntary agreement between you and your creditors. It need not include all of your creditors, nor is it binding on them. It also cannot automatically stop a garnishment order. The underlying assumption in a debt management plan is that you can make a payment but need some help negotiating with your creditors and a little breathing space to get back on top of things. We will assess your financial situation to help you determine whether or not this is the right solution for you.

What a debt management plan can do for you:

$2,500 $78* 16 years & 8 months $2,862.43***

What is a consumer proposal?

Similar to a debt management plan and an alternative to filing for personal bankruptcy, a consumer proposal is typically suitable for individuals who have the ability to repay a portion of their debt. It is a legally binding procedure that is administered by the courts. It will stop wage garnishments and phone calls from creditors as well as all interest charges from the date the proposal is filed. If you are in financial trouble but have some repayment capabilities, we can help you decide if a consumer proposal is your best option.

Should you file for bankruptcy?

Personal bankruptcy is a legal process, governed by Canadian federal law (the Bankruptcy & Insolvency Act). It is designed to help a debtor obtain relief from debts while treating creditors equally and fairly. Filing for bankruptcy protects you from legal and collection action, wage garnishment, eliminates unsecured debts and can be quick and inexpensive when compared to other debt management options.
